Beyond Fluent in Finance

Congratulations! You have completed Fluent in Finance.

Learning is a long-term commitment. Even if you feel comfortable with these finance concepts, we encourage you to return to this material. Review some of the Finance Films and rework some of the Exercises. You'll find that, though you'll have forgotten some of the details in the meantime, your memory will revive. When returning to the material, you'll bring a new perspective that will generate deeper insights.

Here are some other activities you could do to maintain and build on your new finance savvy:

  • Schedule regular meetings with your supervisor or with a financial officer of your organization to discuss the latest financial statements.
  • Analyze the expenses you and your team incur. Ask yourself: Are they variable or fixed? How do they vary over time? What control do I have over them?
  • Find out what payment terms your organization has with your suppliers and your customers. Reflect on the impact these arrangements have on your organization's cash flow position.
  • Prepare a business plan for a project you'd like to implement. Make cash flow projections of different possible scenarios, document and justify your assumptions, perform a net present value analysis, and discuss your ideas with your supervisor, a mentor, or a peer.
